A Personalised Approach to Sagging Neck
A sagging neck can change your profile even when your face has changed very little. Loose skin, visible muscle bands or fullness beneath the chin may soften the angle between the jaw and neck. These features can develop separately or together, and each calls for a careful assessment of the skin and underlying structures.
At Ullas Facial Plastic Surgery, sagging neck treatment, sometimes called ‘turkey neck’ treatment, is planned around the cause of the change. The concern may lie mainly in the skin, or involve the platysma muscle and deeper tissues beneath the chin. The lower face is also assessed, particularly when jowls affect the definition of the jawline.
About
What Is a Sagging Neck?
A sagging neck is a loss of firmness or contour in the skin and tissues beneath the chin and jaw. It may appear as folds of loose skin, vertical bands at the front of the neck, heaviness under the chin or a less distinct neck angle. These features can occur separately or together, so the right treatment depends on what is causing them.

What Causes Neck Skin and Tissue to Sag?
Neck sagging develops as the skin, platysma muscle and deeper supporting tissues change over time. What looks like loose skin from the outside may also involve muscle separation or tissue gathering beneath the chin.
Changes that can contribute to a sagging neck include:
- Loss of elasticity in the neck skin
- Loosening or separation of the platysma muscle, which can create visible bands
- Descent of soft tissue beneath the jaw
- Fullness under the chin
- Weight changes that leave excess skin or alter the neck contour
- Genetics and the natural shape of the chin and neck
Assessment
How We Assess a Sagging Neck at Ullas Facial Plastic Surgery
At Ullas Facial Plastic Surgery, we assess the neck from the front and in profile, examining the skin, platysma muscle, tissue beneath the chin and angle below the jaw. We also review the lower face to determine whether jowls contribute to the loss of definition. Your health, previous procedures and treatment goals help determine whether a neck lift alone is appropriate or facial lifting should also be considered.
Treatment Options
Sagging Neck Treatment Options at Ullas Facial Plastic Surgery
A preservation deep plane neck lift is the main surgical option when sagging involves the neck’s deeper tissues. If loose lower-face tissue also affects the jawline, treating both regions may provide a more balanced contour. The recommendation is based on where the changes have developed, not simply on the amount of loose skin.
Preservation Deep Plane Neck Lift for a Sagging Neck
A preservation deep plane neck lift repositions deeper neck tissues, including the platysma muscle, to improve the contour beneath the jaw. It can address muscle banding, soft tissue descent and loss of the chin–neck angle while allowing the skin to be redraped without excessive tension. The procedure can be performed on its own when the lower face does not also require a lift.
Facelift and Neck Lift When Sagging Extends Into the Lower Face
Treating the neck alone may leave a visible change in contour if substantial jowls remain above it. In this situation, a preservation deep plane facelift may be discussed alongside the neck lift. Addressing both regions allows the surgical plan to follow the full extent of the tissue descent.
Your journey
What to Expect From Your Sagging Neck Treatment
Neck surgery is planned around the skin, muscle and deeper tissues involved. Your surgeon will explain the proposed procedure, incision placement and likely recovery in detail, including whether treatment is limited to the neck or also involves the lower face.
At your free consultation, one of our facial plastic surgeons will examine your neck, assess any muscle bands or fullness beneath the chin, and look at how the neck meets the jawline. We will also discuss what you would like to change and what surgery can realistically achieve. A second complimentary consultation is available if you would like to review the plan before making a decision.
A preservation deep plane neck lift is performed under general anaesthetic. Carefully positioned incisions give the surgeon access to the deeper neck structures, which are repositioned before the skin is redraped. If a facelift is also recommended, we will explain the combined procedure and its effect on recovery as part of your surgical plan.
Swelling and tightness are expected during the early stages of healing, and your neck contour will continue to change as the tissues settle. You will receive guidance on incision care, activity, and gradually returning to daily life. Follow-up appointments allow your surgeon to monitor progress and answer questions throughout recovery.
As swelling subsides, the angle beneath the chin and the distinction between the jaw and neck become easier to see. A neck lift can improve loose tissue and muscle-related changes, but the final contour depends on your anatomy and the extent of surgery. The result you can reasonably expect will be discussed before you decide on treatment.

Choose Us
Why Choose Ullas Facial Plastic Surgery for Sagging Neck Treatment?
A neck lift needs to address the structures causing the sagging, rather than simply pull loose skin tighter. Our facial plastic surgeons examine the neck muscles and deeper tissues alongside the jawline, then plan the procedure around the contour that needs restoring. This includes clear advice on when a neck lift alone is suitable and when changes in the lower face also need attention.
Our approach gives you:
A detailed assessment of neck anatomy, including muscle bands, tissue beneath the chin and the shape of the neck angle
Preservation deep plane techniques that address deeper support while avoiding excessive tension on the skin
An honest recommendation about the lower face, including whether a standalone neck lift can achieve the result you want
Free consultations with one of our facial plastic surgeons, with a second appointment available before you make a decision
Support beyond the procedure, through a named point of contact, scheduled reviews and complimentary aftercare

FAQ
Sagging Neck FAQs
Can loose skin on the neck tighten without surgery?
Mild changes in skin quality may improve, but significant loose skin or descended neck tissue will not return to its previous position on its own. An assessment can establish whether your concern is mainly at the skin’s surface or involves the deeper structures that shape the neck.
Can a neck lift improve visible neck bands?
Yes, a neck lift can improve bands caused by laxity or separation of the platysma muscle. Your surgeon will assess the bands during consultation and explain how much improvement is realistic.
Can a sagging neck be treated without a facelift?
Yes, a neck lift can be performed on its own when the lower face does not also need lifting. If pronounced jowls affect the jawline, facial treatment may be discussed as part of the same plan.
Will a neck lift improve fullness beneath the chin?
A neck lift can improve under-chin fullness when it is related to loose muscle or descended soft tissue. Fullness has different possible causes, so the area must be examined before your surgeon can explain what the procedure will address.
Where are the incisions for sagging neck surgery?
Incisions are planned around the ears and, when needed, beneath the chin to reach the relevant neck structures. Their exact position depends on your procedure and will be shown to you before surgery.
What does recovery after a neck lift involve?
Early recovery involves swelling, some tightness and a temporary reduction in activity while the incisions heal. The neck contour continues to refine over the following weeks and months, with follow-up appointments arranged to check your progress.
Will the neck lift scars be visible?
A neck lift leaves scars, although the incisions are placed as discreetly as the procedure allows. Scars change as they heal, and their expected position and care will be discussed during your consultation.
How long do neck lift results last?
A neck lift provides long-lasting structural improvement, although the skin and deeper tissues continue to age. Your anatomy, skin quality and lifestyle will influence how the neck contour changes in the years after surgery.
